Papers consist of correspondence, a travel diary, heraldic drawings, and other items. Correspondence (1750-1773) includes photocopies and originals of letters of Peter Manigault in England to his parents Ann Ashby Manigault and Gabriel Manigault in South Carolina concerning his sea voyages, social life, relatives, his desire to have the means of a "gentleman," travels in England and Europe, politics, his law studies, and other South Carolinians abroad. Other correspondence includes letters to Manigault from John Farquharson, Robert Jantzen, and others, and letters (1773) to Gabriel and Ann Ashby Manigault from Stead family members, Henry Laurens, and others concerning Peter Manigault's illness and death in London (England). A letterbook (1763-1773) contains handwritten copies of Manigault's letters to Ralph Izard, Sarah Nickleson & Co. (London, England), Charles Garth, Miles Brewton, and others concerning family legal and estate matters, plantation affairs, and other topics. Diary (1752) of Peter Manigault's travels through England includes descriptions of villages, architecture, and the countryside. Volume also contains notes on heraldry. Three bound volumes (1749) contain drawings of the coats of arms and family crests of noble families of Ireland, England, and Scotland.
